What can I do to prepare for my massage?

  • Eat lightly - A light meal a few hours before your massage is ideal. Avoid eating a heavy meal immediately before your massage.

  • Take a warm shower - A nice warm shower will help relax your muscles and prepare your body for massage.

  • Be yourself - So whether or not you have shaved your legs or you're self-conscious about your body etc, just turn up and be yourself. Your massage therapist is here to help you not to judge you.

  • Arrive on time - Please arrive no more than 5-10 minutes before your appointment begins and also please allow for extra time on top your massage time. This allows for meeting and talking with your therapist before your massage begins, getting undressed and redressed, aftercare advice and having water etc.

  • Dress comfortably - Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing to your massage. Your therapist will leave the room whilst you undress and position yourself underneath the blanket or towels on the massage table, so it is important to be comfortable in what you are wearing and that you are able to remove and put back on your clothing with ease.

  • Remove your jewellery in advance - Before your massage begins, you will be asked to remove any jewellery from the areas about to be massaged. Ideally, please remove and safely store away any jewellery before you arrive. If this is not possible, there will be a space available for you to store your jewellery and other belongings during your massage. Please remember to take them with you at the end of your massage.

  • Bring a hair bobble/clip - Long hair tends to get caught or tangled especially during a back massage, so you may find it helpful to bring a hair bobble or clip to tie your hair up.

  • Be honest with your massage therapist - Tell your massage therapist about any areas of your body that are particularly sore or sensitive. They will adjust their massage accordingly. Equally if you prefer a deeper massage in particular areas, please do not hesitate to say.

  • Relax and enjoy yourself - A massage is a relaxing experience that can help relieve stress and tension. If you feel you need to talk during your massage, your therapist will be there to listen and if you wish to have a tranquil, quiet massage, your therapist will follow your lead. This is your moment, so let yourself relax and enjoy your massage.

Can I still have a massage if I have a sunburn, bruises, cuts, recent scarring (less than 6 months old), blisters, fractures, sprains, non-infectious skin diseases, varicose veins or areas of inflammation?

Yes, please inform your therapist before you have your massage and any areas that are sore or painful will be avoided.

Is it normal to feel achey, tired or emotional after a massage?

Yes, this is called the healing crisis and can occur for 2-3 days after a massage. This is due to the release of toxins from the body as the body rebalances and cleanses itself. There are many things you can do to help minimize this:

• Do gentle stretches in the evening to avoid your muscles becoming stiff, focusing on any particular areas that received extra attention during your massage.

• Avoid overexerting yourself, both physically and mentally, allowing yourself time to recover, repair and rebalance.

• Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks! This is so important to help keep the muscles hydrated and more flexible.

• Avoid heavy meals so the body can focus on healing rather than on digestion.

• If you are experiencing any inflammation in a particular area, apply a cold pack for 10 minutes and then have a break for 10 minutes and then on again for 10 and so on to help reduce any swelling.

• Have a warm bath in Epsom salts to help ease any aches and pains. Please note this must be warm and not hot to avoid  increasing inflammation.
